'I'm devastated... absolutely devastated - my business and my livelihood are on the line'

Eccles Market traders say they're devastated over a proposed £10m regeneration project that will see 60-year-old stands knocked down. The plans are a part of 'Eccles Vision', with the shopping centre, market and car park set to be demolished in three phases.
The plans were revealed in January 2023. Council bosses say they're searching for a new location for the market. But the plans have caused chaos among the market traders, with many feeling pushed out of the historic market town.
One trader, Janet Newton, 59, of Kiss N Make-up, said: “I’m devastated, absolutely devastated it is my business, and it’s my livelihood.” Janet’s been on the market for 12 years and says she feels as though she and other traders are being forgotten in the new plans.

It’s like ripping the heart out of the community as well as us,” she added. Janet spoke about the fear over a loss of community and the response from customers: “Everybody is devastated we have petitions going online and in the market itself. People are coming in saying ‘where is your petition? We want to sign it'... so that’s just how much it matters as a community.”
Wendy Griffiths, 58, left her job to run a market stall after her mum - who had run the wool business for over 60 years - died. "The market is still feeding and clothing me and my brother and has done since the day we were born," she said.
