"Have you ever been told something that completely shocked you? Or left you feeling betrayed? That’s how I felt when I found out I had a secret half-sister. I was 23 and although I was thriving in my job at a recruitment company, I was also making regular, heartbreaking trips to see my mum in hospital. Her breast cancer had spread to her bones and she didn’t have long to live.
She was only 50 years old. It was during one of those visits that my mum told me the secret that would turn my world upside down. Sitting at her bedside one day, I mentioned how, on a recent trip to Kent, a woman in a shop kept calling me Daphne.
“It was so bizarre,” I said. Mum looked at me. “You know, don’t you?” Confused, I told her I had no idea what she was talking about and that’s when she broke the news.
I had a secret half-sister. I was so shocked, at first I didn’t think she was telling the truth. “What are you talking about?” I asked in disbelief.
But she assured me it wasn’t a lie. Suddenly, the incident with the stranger in Kent made sense.
The lady I saw probably knew my sister and I must have looked exactly like her.
That was why she was calling me Daphne. Mum said the only reason she hadn’t told me sooner was because she had promised my father she would keep quiet.
I was so upset, astounded that my parents had kept something so huge from me and my younger sister Pamela, now 70, for so long. When Pamela found out, she didn’t want to believe it either. Sadly, my mum died three days after she told me, on New Year’s Eve in 1973.
