EXCLUSIVE: Devo will be coming to the Sundance Film Festival in more ways than one.
Just one day after the Chris Smith-directed documentary about the new wave band makes its SFF debut in Park City on January 21, Devo will be taking the stage at the newly opened Marquis on the luxury ski town’s Main Street, I’ve learned.
At $50 a pop for general admission and $150 for VIP, tickets for the gig should be going on sale now. As Dave Grohl and Nick Cave can tell you, Sundance has long been a magnet for big-name bands and performers with films on their careers in the festival, so the Devo show was rumored ever since SFF’s lineup was revealed on December 6.
Coming off the band’s 50th anniversary last year, the gig opening for Paul Oakenfold is a bit of a return to an old stomping ground for the “Whip It” boys. Devo infamously closed out the 1996 Sundance Film Festival. Dress in striped prison suits and the band’s trademark red energy dome hats, the show has gone into lore and was even released as a Butch Devo and the Sundance Gig film of its own.
Formed in 1973 by Kent State students Mark Mothersbaugh, Gerald Casale and Bob Lewis, Devo challenged the very concept of what a band was, what a show was and who the audiences were. In that vein the band were heralded by David Bowie and Neil Young and charmed many more with their very distinct cover of the Rolling Stones’ classic “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” in 19778, which they played on Saturday Night Live the following year. Devo hit the Top 40 in 1980 with the instant classic of their own, “Whip It,” from the Freedom of Choice album.
Although Mothersbaugh went on to be the music behind a number of Wes Anderson films along with the likes of Pee-wee’s Playhouse and Rugrats,

Palestine march down Main Street in Park City drew roughly 100 protesters to the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday. The march, organized by “Let Gaza Live,” bussed protesters in from nearby Kimball Junction and took up space in front of local restaurant Riverhorse on Main. The event was not affiliated with Sundance.
Chanting “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” Melissa Barrera joined almost pro-Palestinian protestors today at the Sundance Film Festival.
Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic Devo is headed to Sundance, not just for the festival premiere of the Chris Smith-directed documentary film that share’s the band’s name, but a Jan. 21 performance by the group at the just-opened Marquis on Main Street.
Brent Lang Executive Editor The title alone was enough to convince Aubrey Plaza to appear in “My Old Ass,” an offbeat coming-of-age story that was warmly received during its premiere Saturday night at the Sundance Film Festival. “It all just made sense to me,” Plaza told the sold-out crowd at the Eccles Theater in Park City, Utah. “‘My Old Ass,’ I was like, ‘Oh man.'” And when Plaza spent time with Megan Park, the film’s writer and director, and discovered her affinity for unusual means of transportation, Aubrey knew she had signed on to the perfect project.
William Earl administrator “Now this motherfucker can play guitar!” a wobbly, dancing Millennial shouted deep into the Black Keys‘ Friday night show in Park City, drunk off their grimy rock and plenty of beer. It turns out the man was a perfect summation of a crowd full of too-cool Sundance attendees letting their hair down, moving and drinking like it was a basement party, and the Keys had the right sound to let loose.
Nico Parker is experiencing one of the most exciting moments of her career. The young actress is booked and busy, with “Suncoast” premiering at the Sundance Film Festival.
Matt Donnelly Senior Film Writer Pro-Palestinian supporters will march through the center of the Sundance Film Festival this weekend. While details have not been widely publicized, organizers behind the “Let Gaza Live” protest have asked participants to gather for a demonstration on Sunday regarding the Israel-Hamas war on Main Street in Park City, Utah.
This is so scary!
“I didn’t really know much about the making of the song,” admits The Greatest Night in Pop director Bao Nguyen of 1985’s star-studded Ethiopian famine relief hit “We Are the World.” “You just make these assumptions about how things are made because it just happens. But when you think now of 46 great artists getting together to make that, it would be really impossible for that to happen now.”

The Finals has received a massive new update today (January 17) adding a new game mode, new outfits, and more. The main attraction of update 1.5.0 is a new player vs player mode named ‘Solo Bank It’, which changes the already existing ‘Bank It’ mode from a trios-based game to a game mode where twelve players are all fighting against each other to try and grab as much money as they can. This mode is a limited-time event, with no real indication as to how long it’ll be sticking around other than the fact that according to the patch notes the mode is being put out to “learn more about your experience”. Developer Embark Studios will be opening a Discord channel to gather any feedback about the mode and decide on any tweaks that need making. The update also comes with several balance changes, tweaks to gameplay, and bug fixes to issues that fans have been complaining about since the game was originally released.
