As Adams' descended into total depravity, on that early winter night last year, he burgled a student's flat and violently raped her. After attacking the woman and stealing her belongings, he forced her to withdraw cash from an ATM at knifepoint.
Despite the drugs he had abused, Adams knew exactly what he was doing. He thought he'd left the scene without a trace.
He had worn a mask, gloves and kept his hood up so he couldn’t be identified. He’d left no bodily fluid, no tell-tale samples at the scene.
So, when the police were called, they were left with a seemingly impossible task.
But, without the forensics to aid the process, police went back to basics. Officers' nous, local knowledge, painstakingly joining the dots - and that crucial understanding of the mindset of an offender.
