A hopeful electrician aced his maths GCSE just hours after learning of his mum's sudden death. Carl Turner, 52, sat his maths exam the the morning after he found out that his mum Lynn passed away from a lung haemorrhage at the age of 69.
The Hopwood Hall College and University Centre student, who had never achieved a pass in mathematics and previously served in the army in Iraq, had enrolled onto the free course alongside his studies to become an electrician.
And like many other students across the UK, the dad, from Rochdale, went to pick up his results with his 14-year-old son Luke on Thursday (August 24) where he was told the news he had passed.

Despite being grief-stricken from the news of his mum's sudden death, that he received while in a revision session, Carl went on to complete the paper and found out that he had passed the crucial qualification that he revised for while completing a Level 2 qualification in Electrical Installation at Hopwood Hall.
“My mum was so proud that I’d decided to retrain as an electrician and I know she’d be proud of me today," he said. “I was especially hesitant about doing maths.
"I did it because I had to do it to become an electrician – but I loved it. I met so many new friends from different cultures and different backgrounds. It was great and I always looked forward to the lessons.”
The dad-of-two has now secured an electrical apprenticeship with Redstone Building Services in Chadderton, Oldham despite his nerves about being an adult learner. Prior to applying for the popular pathway, he was unaware that the course was fully-funded and had been saving up to afford the presumed course
