Gemma Lawson is very much the face of our caring health service in Scotland – and her unstinting efforts to go the extra mile for her patients has been recognised.
She won the People’s Choice Award at the Scottish Health Awards, run by the Daily Record in partnership with NHS Scotland and the Scottish Government to celebrate the dedication of the health and care services.
Gemma, a Health Care Support Worker, Care of the Older Person at Cameron Hospital in NHS Fife, was one of a long list of healing heroes attending a glittering awards event last week in Edinburgh.
During the pandemic, she volunteered at the hospital alongside her official role, supporting the mental health and wellbeing of patients during this difficult and often lonely time.
It meant coming in after her clinical work was finished and cheering up the patients with activities such as nail painting, reminiscence, sing-a-longs, bingo, and even organising a garden party for the Queen’s Jubilee.
The People’s Choice Award, where the public cast votes for the finalists, recognises NHS and staff and carers in responding to the coronavirus pandemic while maintaining essential services and care.
“You are only as good as your team and I work with the best team,” said Gemma. “Thank you to everyone who voted for me, it means the world.”
The finalists in the 16 categories of the Scottish Health Awards gathered at the O2 Academy in Edinburgh hosted by comedian Fred MacAulay and attended by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care Humza Yousaf MSP, alongside representatives from the Scottish Government, NHS Scotland and the Daily Record.
Mr Yousaf MSP said: “This is the 21st year of the awards, and with more than 750 nominations, it’s clear that the people of Scotland have

You might ask, how’s Jonah Hill doing these days? Because truthfully, if you lean in and think about it, we haven’t seen the actor on screen all that much since he seemingly pivoted to directing with his promising debut, “mid90s,” in 2018. In the four years since, we’ve seen him all of twice, smaller supporting roles in “The Beach Bum” and “Don’t Look Up,” a quick appearance on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and some small animated voice work.
Every episode of Steven Knight’s new series “Rogue Heroes” begins with a declarative statement: “Based on a true story, the events depicted which seem most unbelievable … are mostly true.” It’s the sort of pithy postmodern title card that might elicit an eye-roll. Yet it also perfectly encapsulates this rollicking tale of the Special Air Service (SAS) formation during World War II. While occasionally deploying anachronistic ‘80s rock songs to lighten the mood and using title cards that can probably be best described as graffiti-chic, “Rogue Heroes” is both utterly unbelievable and, well, mainly true to the facts.
While fans of Kelsea Ballerini and Morgan Evans may have been caught off guard by their split, the country singers had seen the writing on the wall.
Putting in the work. Olivia Culpo said she’s still coping with some of the darker moments in her past, but she’s doing what she can to put it all behind her.
A bittersweet effect. Glee was already over when Naya Rivera died in 2020, but her costars Jenna Ushkowitz and Kevin McHale believe her death led to healing among the surviving cast members.
