A heartbroken mum has made an impassioned plea for restrictions on the prescription of a highly addictive drug used to treat people suffering from mental illness in the wake of her son's death from an unintentional overdose.
An inquest heard how after 27-year-old software test engineer Alex Cottam became hooked on the drug Pregabalin after his GP prescribed it for his anxiety and depression.
Assistant coroner for Manchester West Rachel Syed heard how once Alex had become hooked on the drug he began ordering it online from a source in the UK.
Other prescription drugs he ordered using the internet were sedatives, benzodiapene, dihydrocodein and tramadol.

He was found dead in his Memorial Road, Salford, flat on September 1, 2021, after taking what the hearing concluded was an unintentional overdose of all of these drugs.
Pathologist Dr Mayuri Basnet told the Bolton hearing that Alex had taken three times the safe dose of pregabalin which combined with the other three drugs resulted in fatal pneumonia.
Ms Syed concluded that the tragedy was 'misadventure' and the cause of Alex's death was multiple dug toxicity.
Although the coroner found that the Pregabalin had been 'appropriately prescribed' by Alex's GP, in an emotional address Michelle said: "He acquired pregabalin from the internet. If there's anything you people should learn about this drug, is that it should not be prescribed to someone with an addictive personality like my son.
"It is known to be highly addictive and it took over his life. His death has been caused by his mental state and the availability online of pregabalin. It shouldn't be prescribed to anyone
