Rishi Sunak 'hasn't spoken to any northern leaders' after he axed the HS2 rail link to Manchester, a mayor who also complained about his alternative proposals said today.
After weeks of mounting speculation, the Prime Minister used his Conservative Party Conference speech in Manchester on Wednesday to announce the line would not reach the city as promised. He claimed 'every penny' of the £36bn saved would be reinvested in 'hundreds' of transport projects in the North and the Midlands, under what he called Network North.
But West Yorkshire mayor Tracy Brabin said Mr Sunak had not consulted northern leaders on his transport plans - both before he announced them and afterwards.

She told BBC Breakfast on Thursday: "It also feels quite frustrating that when the Prime Minister was on the platform, he was saying 'I know what the North needs'.
"He hasn’t spoken to any northern leaders and we could have been helpful in trying to work out what was actually a priority for us and it is that capacity that HS2 was there to solve." She also complained about a lack of detail on the transport schemes announced by Mr Sunak.
"We've had a decade of underfunding on transport in the North," said Ms Brabin. "Now we've been given the things that we've been campaigning on, pots of money – we don't know what they are, we don't know where they're coming from, we don't know the timeframe."
Mr Sunak has faced criticism from his predecessors in Number 10 for losing a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” by cancelling the northern leg of HS2.
