Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s christening for their daughter Lilibet was “not liked” by the institution, a royal expert has claimed. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s service for their 21 month old daughter was “totally different” to the formal baptisms staged by Prince William and Kate Middleton for their three children, commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told OK!.
Earlier this month, Harry, 38, and Meghan, 41, announced Lilibet had been christened at their home in Montecito, California. The christening was described as an intimate occasion, with around 30 people in attendance.
In a statement issued afterwards, the couple publicly referred to the toddler as Princess Lilibet Diana for the first time. According to reports, invitations to the youngster’s christening were extended to the Prince and Princess of Wales - as well as to King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla - however none were in attendance.
When asked how Lilibet’s baptism compared to the ones held for the Wales children, royal expert Mr Fitzwilliams said: “It's totally different. “They were all formal christenings, a list of godparents were given and there was a certain amount of photography allowed, not of the service but you could see comings and goings.
“It was not liked that the Sussexes didn't want that." He added: “On the other hand, it's their children and from that point of view, you can understand perhaps why they decided, although the way they operate is so difficult to predict, but it was up to them to decide what publicity they wanted. “They've opened up areas of their lives in ways that are certainly breaching unusual for a couple who are so private, if you think of the Netflixdocuseries.” OK! has contacted Buckingham Palace and representatives
