Jack Dunn Lionsgate has released the trailer for Mel Gibson‘s high-flying action thriller “Flight Risk,” starring Mark Wahlberg. Per an official logline, the film follows “a pilot (Wahlberg) transporting an Air Marshal (Michelle Dockery) accompanying a fugitive (Topher Grace) to trial. As they cross the Alaskan wilderness, tensions soar and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem.” “Flight Risk” marks the third collaboration between Gibson and Wahlberg.
What’s the status of people like Mel Gibson in Hollywood? Gibson was seemingly persona non-grata during the #MeToo movement, a sort of belated punishment for his past tabloid transgressions that hit in 2009 (racist, sexist, anti-semitic rants the actor has never been able to shake off), but Hollywood is fickle. #MeToo started in earnest in 2017.
In his best performances, Mark Wahlberg acts as a sort of 21st-century Bruce Willis, combining comic and action chops as a beleaguered regular Joe battling forces above his pay grade, armed with a scowl and ready quip. No matter how idealized and saintly the characterization, Wahlberg always plays a human being pulled into extraordinary situations, not a superhero. “The Union,” directed by Julian Farino for the Netflix streaming service, uses Wahlberg in such a way.
