The RSPCA is investigating after two guinea pigs were left out on a road dumped in a carboard box.
A member of the public found the box as she was putting out their wheelie bins and immediately alerted the animal protection charity.
Now the RSPCA is urging potential owners to research the needs of small pets as in a separate incident, three ferrets were found abandoned inside a small cage also left out on a street.

The two long-haired, male guinea pigs were found dumped in the box on Wythburn Road in Middleton at around 3pm on Monday, February 5.
Now named Horace and Spike, they are said to be doing well after treatment. The RSPCA said it suspects their owners either didn't have the correct expertise to care for them - or were struggling with the cost of keeping them.
A spokesman said: "They were both suffering with matted fur and after they were collected by RSPCA Inspector Alex Ashton, they underwent treatment at Greater Manchester Animal Hospital. The two small pets, now named Horace and Spike, have made a good recovery and are now in the care of RSPCA Derby & District Branch."
Inspector Ashton said: "This was very distressing to see as the guinea pigs were left in the street in a poor condition. They are long-haired guinea pigs and their coats hadn't been looked after. They had to have them shaved off at our hospital."
Elsewhere, the RSPCA is investigating the abandonment of three ferrets left in a small cage on Aberdare Close in Blackburn, Lancashire, on Saturday, February 3. Posters were put up on the street, but no-one has come forward to claim the pets.
