Golden Globes Reward Comedies and Musicals That Soothe the Pandemic Soul

Publicists from more than 100 firms that represent nearly all of the talent in Hollywood have sent a letter to the HFPA to demand “transformational change” within the organization.

Netflix split its quartet among Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Trial of the Chicago 7, I Care a Lot and The Life Ahead, while Amazon won a pair for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and another for Small Axe.

Returning co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler kicked off the 78th annual Golden Globes with a funny and topical opening monologue, addressing COVID-19 and the lack of diverse representation within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The duo took the stage from opposite coasts for the first time in Golden Globes history, with Fey hosting live from the Rainbow Room in New York City and Poehler from inside the Beverly Hilton, where the awards show normally takes place.

In an awards season unlike any we’ve seen, the Golden Globes still stuck to the script when it came to the Best Film Drama, with Searchlight Pictures’ Nomadland taking home the top prize Sunday night. It was the film’s second win at the 78th Golden Globes after its director, Chloe Zhao, made history by becoming the first Asian woman and second woman to take home the prize. The film beat out fellow nominees The Father, The Trial of The Chicago 7, Mank and Promising Young Woman.
