Kudos in Crisis: As Globes Eye NBC Return, SAG and Spirit Awards Continue Search for New Homes

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large It wasn’t that long ago that live telecasts like major league sporting events and star-studded awards shows were considered the savior of networks struggling to maintain relevancy in a streaming age. And while streamers have taken their lumps lately — and sports is indeed keeping the lights on in linear — the age of blockbuster awards shows appears to be over. Which would mean it’s perhaps an inopportune time for the ceremonies out there looking for a new home or, in the case of the Golden Globes, looking to return, period. Late last month, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. agreed to let Eldridge Industries, run by Todd Boehly, purchase the Golden Globes and make that part of the HFPA a for-profit enterprise. Eldridge has also taken control of Dick Clark Prods., the company that produces the Globes, which means Boehly has a vested interest in getting the show back on NBC.

And some insiders are thrilled.“I do make a bonus if our project wins,” said an awards campaigner for a top streaming platform. “If the Globes go by the wayside, I could be out thirty grand a year.”Indeed, finances are the main factor driving the Globes’ possible return“For our purposes, it would help to have themback on the air.

Is the Golden Globes’ Comeback Doomed by the New-Look HFPA?

according to some reports. Or the reports of the Globes’ return might be premature, a trial balloon launched by those with a lot at stake in that return. But while things appear to be up in the air, can we ask a couple of questions? For starters: How will it benefit Hollywood to bring back the quintessential high-visibility, low-pressure awards show?(High visibility because the ratings are pretty good, and the stars, at least in the past, have shown up; low pressure because all those stars know that it doesn’t really matter if several dozen members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association give that clunky statue to somebody else.)Also: As the HFPA reaches for reforms, are those moves doomed by the organization’s new, for-profit structure, which is automatically less transparent and loaded with more conflicts of interest than the old structure? The background behind those questions is well known by now.
