They came for the crime but stayed for the characters, is how the cast and crew of Netflix’s hit series Delhi Crime summarize the outsized success of the show’s first season.
Delhi Crime Season 2 follows those same characters – Shefali Shah’s DCP Vartika Chaturvedi, younger cop Neeti Singh (Rasika Dugal) and right-hand man Bhupendra Singh (Rajesh Tailang) – as they tackle a series of brutal murders of senior citizens in the middle-class neighbourhoods of South Delhi.
With US-based indie filmmaker Tanuj Chopra (Punching At The Sun, Staycation) on board as showrunner and director, working with a team of Indian writers, the series is loosely based on the Kacha-Baniyan gang murders in North India in the 1990s, but is not an exact replica of a particular crime as with the first series.
Delhi Crime Season 1, written and directed by Canadian filmmaker Richie Mehta, followed the police’s hunt for the culprits of a real-life gang rape and murder in South Delhi in 2012, that shocked India and the world due to its brutality. The heavily-researched series followed the original case closely (the police characters were fictional but inspired by real people) and was praised for its realism and sensitivity, winning a string of awards including an Emmy for best international drama in 2020.
“When Richie handed me his notes, the question was where do I take this material?” says Chopra, adding that Netflix brought him on board because the raw, hand-held, fast-paced nature of his indie films matched the tone of the show.
“My hope was that we’d find a way to grow the show and pull in an audience that didn’t see the first season, perhaps because they couldn’t take the material, or did see it because they were familiar with the crime, and then

Naman Ramachandran Bhutanese filmmaker Dechen Roder’s new film, “I, The Song,” which is selected at the Venice Production Bridge’s gap financing market, will commence principal photography in December. Roder’s debut feature “Honeygiver Among the Dogs” premiered at Busan in 2016, and went on to have a successful festival run including at Berlin, Locarno, Hong Kong, Taipei and Fribourg, where it won three major awards. “I, The Song” was born when two friends of Roder experienced the horror of being in non-consensual pornographic videos and photos in Bhutan, where in both cases it was recorded and shared without their knowledge or consent.

Naman Ramachandran Director Aditya Chopra has revealed a grand vision for “Come Fall in Love,” the stage adaptation of his immensely popular 1995 film Bollywood film “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,” commonly abbreviated to DDLJ. Producer Yash Raj Films has also shared an exclusive image of the production’s rehearsal with Variety. Chopra said: “I first conceived the story of DDLJ (even before it was called DDLJ) as a Hollywood love story of a white American man and an Indian woman. My main motivation at that time was to present Indian culture and values to a global audience. Years later, as I reimagine the story as a Broadway musical, my mainstay is still the same, showcasing Indian culture to a world audience. And the most powerful way to depict a country’s culture and values is to see it from the perspective of someone who does not belong to the same culture. That is the starting point of ‘Come Fall In Love,’ the story of Indian Simran, her culture and heritage, through the eyes of American Roger.”
Naman Ramachandran Indian actor Rasika Dugal is on a roll, with season 2 of Emmy-winning Netflix series “Delhi Crime” streaming, season 3 of Amazon Prime Video series “Mirzapur” filming and several other series and films in the works. Dugal describes season 2 of “Delhi Crime” as “very different from season 1, but still very sensitively and beautifully told,” adding that the series is minutely detailed. While the first season revolved around an horrific 2012 rape case, which caught the attention of the world, the second season follows multiple murders, which are similarly done, and the police investigates.
