The Governors Awards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is always one of the annual Hollywood nights I look forward to, one that delivers Honorary Oscars in a non-televised but always warm, fun, and inspiring evening. I have attended every single one of them, and even wrote the 2nd Governors Awards, but I have to say Tuesday night’s 14th annual ceremony had an extra personal and devastatingly heartfelt kick to it, quite unforseen when the Academy’s Board Of Governors announced their honorees -97 year old Mel Brooks, Film Editor Carol Littleton, Angela Bassett, and Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter – way back on June 26.

2024 Golden Globes, the award show made a bunch of reforms to its ethically wobbly voting body, got a new owner and moved to a different network.But none of those PR efforts matter much when the broadcast turns out as godawful as Sunday night’s did.If only we’d 100% canceled the Globes when we had the chance.Wow, was this shindig agonizing. The evening was unbearably unfunny and had just two or three great speeches over three long hours.

The Oscar winner helped announce this year’s categories for best supporting actress and actor in a motion picture. The winners were Da’Vine Joy Randolph for “The Holdovers” and Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr. has taken the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a motion picture drama for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in Universal’s Oppenheimer. This was Downey Jr.’s fifth Golden Globe nomination and third win.
