Quentin Tarantino has reportedly cast a new leading man

Quentin Tarantino has offered Paul Walter Hauser the lead role in his next film The Movie Critic, according to reports. As reported by Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman (via World Of Reel), Hauser is said to have been offered the lead role prior to the Hollywood actors’ strike – which has halted development on the project. It’s believed Hauser is lined up to play fictional film critic Jim Sheldon, who is speculated to be based on William Margold – a real life critic who Tarantino described in his book Cinema Speculation as the “first-string film critic for the sex rag the Hollywood Press”.Tarantino has reportedly been writing under the pseudonym of Jim Sheldon on the New Beverly Cinema website, where the pen name is described as writing for the Hollywood Press.Hauser is best known for supporting roles in I, Tonya, BlacKkKlansman, Late Night, Da 5 Bloods and Cruella. He also played the title character in Clint Eastwood’s 2019 film Richard Jewell. Most recently, he won a Golden Globe for his performance as suspected serial killer Larry Hall in the 2022 Apple TV+ miniseries Black Bird, opposite Taron Egerton.Speaking to Deadline earlier this year about The Movie Critic, Tarantino said the project – set in Southern California in 1977 – would be based on a real-life critic for a porno magazine.“He wrote about mainstream movies and he was the second-string critic,” the director said.

Richard Linklater On ‘Hit Man’ Premiering In Venice, Cinema’s “Existential Threat”, And Lessons Learned Over 30 Years Of Filmmaking

On its surface, a comedy about a college professor who becomes a phony hitman for the police department to catch criminals hoping to whack a stubborn spouse or bothersome business associate might seem an odd fit for a European festival noted for heavy dramas and extended runtimes. It helps, of course, that Hit Man, which premieres at Venice Film Festival this evening, is directed by Richard Linklater, a noted master of independent filmmaking for more than 30 years, and that initial reactions to it have been universally effusive.

‘The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial’ Review: William Friedkin’s Deceptively Simple Swansong Is Another Morbid Excavation Of Human Weakness & Cruelty [Venice]

A quote by William Friedkin himself opens “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial,” describing the film, as well as all the filmmaker’s other works, as being about “the thin line between good and evil.” This line is all the thinner here, in the American director’s final feature, for it is entirely a matter of opinion. We are not given to see the facts of this story as they unfolded; we cannot watch and make up our own minds as to whether the people involved were right or wrong to act the way they did.

‘All of Us Strangers’ Makes Andrew Scott an Oscar-Worthy Leading Man

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor Andrew Scott sees dead people, but he could also see an Oscar nomination come his way with his heartbreaking and tenderly emotional turn as a gay screenwriter in Andrew Haigh’s drama “All of Us Strangers.” Loosely based on Taichi Yamada’s 1987 novel “Strangers,” the film follows screenwriter Adam (Scott), who, after an encounter with his neighbor Harry (Paul Mescal), is mysteriously pulled back into his childhood home, where it appears his long-dead parents (played by Claire Foy and Jamie Bell) are actually alive — and haven’t aged in 30 years. Emmy nominee Scott (guest drama actor in 2020 for “Black Mirror”) has been seamlessly maneuvering back and forth between film and television, notably garnering massive attention for his “hot priest” role on “Fleabag.” He absorbs the underlying pain of losing parents, while also grappling with the lingering question of whether they would approve of you or not.
