Everyone with a garden has been issued a warning after reports of Asian hornets spotted in the UK.
The British Pest Control Association (BPCA) has urged people to seek help if they think that the invasive species is present in their garden. This is because a sting from an Asian hornet may result in anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening, but is treatable if action is taken quickly.
While there have been no sightings in Scotland, the insects have been spotted in nearby Northumberland - as well as Dorset and Kent, reports the Echo.
Natalie Bungay, BPCA Technical Manager, said: "If you're not sure what that stripy flying insect buzzing around your garden is, get in touch with a BPCA member who will have the technical knowledge to identify and deal with any infestation."
Asian hornets look similar to European hornets, although are slightly smaller and tend to be black or dark brown.
The invasive species has a distinctive yellow band at the rear, bright yellow tips to the legs, a yellow 'belt’'at the waist and a black head with an orange or yellow face.
Meanwhile, European hornets have markings similar to a wasp on their abdomen, with dark-coloured legs.
Natalie added: "Anyone who has concerns about hornet activity, should contact a pest professional such as a BPCA member, who will have the technical knowledge to spot the difference between an Asian hornet and a native insect."
While gardeners should keep a lookout for the invasive pests, separate advice has recently been issued regarding grass-cutting.
According to experts, cutting the grass too early can harm native species and impact the UK's natural ecosystem.
