In January, City confirmed Alvarez had signed a five-year-deal with the club and was to be sent straight back out on loan to River Plater until at least July 2022. It was possible the deal extended due to his desire to play for Argentina in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, however Guardiola said the player would join up with City in the summer.
