Most people would agree that Manchester stands as one of the premier shopping destinations in the country.
From luxury boutiques nestled in the Victorian Barton Arcade to bustling markets brimming with local crafts and flavours, Manchester has something for every shopping inclination. Not to mention the Arndale shopping centre, attracting shoppers from all over the North West and beyond.
But we know these days that the high street isn't the draw it once was, with a large contribution to this being the seemingly endless rise of online shopping. Even so, many Mancunians still rely on having shops close by.

But through redevelopment, as well as changes in shoppers needs, Manchester has lost a number of shopping centres and precincts through the years. From city centre complexes to precincts and retail parks in the suburbs, many have not stood the test of time.
The Manchester Evening News has decided to take a look back at nine of the city's vanished shopping centres. This isn't a complete list, of course, so if you think any should be included let us know in the comments below.
Situated on Grey Mare Lane, Beswick Shopping Centre opened in the 1970s. The creation of the shopping precinct coincided with the construction of the doomed Wellington Street estate, nicknamed Fort Beswick, which was completed in 1972.
Fort Beswick’s demolition began in 1982, a mere ten years after it was completed. It's thought for a while the shopping centre would fall victim to the bulldozers at the same time, but following a campaign to save the precinct by shopkeepers it was saved.
