Nick Holdsworth There is a certain inevitability about a film inspired by Hermann Hesse’s novel “Steppenwolf,” first published in German in 1927, and two famous Westerns of the 1950s — John Ford’s “The Searchers,” and Howard Hawks’ “Red River.” In acclaimed Kazakh director Adilkhan Yerzhanov’s latest film — also called “Steppenwolf” — two characters who are essentially loners existing outside of the usual moral boundaries of the world come together united in a common task: to save a small boy who has gone missing. The world premiere of “Steppenwolf” is slated for International Film Festival Rotterdam’s Big Screen Competition.

Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent By now, even the most hardcore fans of French cuisine and “Chocolat” star Juliette Binoche can agree that Justine Triet‘s “Anatomy of a Fall” – rather than Tran Anh Hung’s “The Taste of Things” — was the one movie that could have given France its first Oscar win for best international feature in over 30 years, since Régis Wargnier’s “Indochine.” Over the last three decades, a number of French movies have earned Oscar recognition, but none have been the official French Oscar submission. Michael Haneke’s “Amour” earned five Oscar noms in 2013 and even won the best foreign-language Oscar but it represented Austria.

Cocteau Twins reissue final album ‘Milk & Kisses’ on vinyl

Cocteau Twins have announced that their final studio album ‘Milk & Kisses’ is to receive an official re-release.The album was first released in March 1996 via Fontana Records in the UK and was their eighth LP, including the fan-favourite tracks ‘Tishbite’, ‘Violane’ and ‘Eperdu’.The group did re-convene two years later, with the intention of recording their next full-length, but the sessions fell through, and no further albums were made.The re-issued version of the album is available to order now here, and is presented in audiophile 140gm vinyl by Proper Records, in collaboration with Universal Music Recordings. The labels say they have paid “scrupulous attention to the detail of the original UK first pressings”.Last September, the band’s vocalist Elizabeth Fraser had an asteroid named after her by the International Astronomical Union.“It does not pose a threat to humankind and will not collide with Earth for millions of years,” the Union noted, reassuringly.
