A former Manchester United assistant manager is likely to be leading the Australian national team during their crucial World Cup qualifier with Vietnam on Thursday.
Rene Meulensteen was the assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson for five years between 2008 and 2013 before a poor spell as manager of Fulham in December of that year.
Since his time at Craven Cottage, Meulensteen spent time at Philadelphia Union, Maccabi Haifa and Kerala Blasters before becoming the assistant for the Socceroos after the 2018 World Cup.
Current Australia boss Graham Arnold is sidelined with Covid-19 meaning the Dutchman is likely to be in charge for the side's home fixture tomorrow morning UK time.
Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald before the match, Meulensteen said: "I got the opportunity to join the club [Manchester United] in 2001 as a skills development coach and a lot of the young players who came through that junior academy system for me from then are in the team now – people like Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Scott McTominay – and it strengthened me more in my beliefs.
"I was able to convince Ferguson that we could still get benefit from working with first-team players, and he gave me that chance in his last six years at the club."
When asked about working with Sir Alex, the 57-year-old added: "It was a blessing.
"I never felt any moment of anxiety or pressure.
"The big thing was that he trusted us. He never questioned what I was doing."
Australia lie third in their World Cup qualifying group while Vietnam sit bottom without even a point to their name to date.
