The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice that anyone travelling to Greece should know.
In a new update issued on Tuesday, October 24, The Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has confirmed that security has been heightened in prominent locations, including tourist sites, as a result of increased protest demonstrations.
According to the organisation, which provides advice about risks of travel to help British nationals abroad, this is due to events in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
UK residents who are planning to travel to or are already in Greece are being urged to stay aware of surroundings and avoid demonstrations while following advice of local authorities.
The FCDO said: "Demonstrations take place regularly around major squares in central Athens, in particular Syntagma Square. There is currently a heightened risk of demonstrations, particularly in central Athens, related to events in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
"Nationwide strikes and protests can occur at any time and may disrupt road, air, sea travel and cause delays or diversions at border crossings."
On Wednesday, October 18, thousands took to the streets in Athens in support of Palestine, according to local reports.
In the past, some demonstrations have turned violent. If you unexpectedly find yourself near or within one, The FCDO advises you to move away to the last known safe place.
Security forces can often use tear gas to break up demonstrations, which can harm health and affect breathing. If this occurs and medical attention is required, you should call Greece's local emergency service number which is 112.
The on-going situation has prompted the FCDO to update travel advice for other countries including
