The force used by an officer filmed punching a man being detained in the street was 'appropriate', Greater Manchester Police have said. A video showing some of the incident has been widely shared on social media.
The clip appears to show an officer hit the suspect in the head five times as he and a colleague struggle to arrest him. It was filmed by a passer-by, it is understood.
Officers were on patrol when they pulled over a man in BMW driving suspiciously at around 6.08pm on Friday (November 3), the M.E.N. has now learned. He was stopped at junction of Ayres Road and Chorlton Road in Old Trafford.

In body worn camera footage, seen by the Manchester Evening News, he appears to be warned several times by officers to comply. He is ordered to put hands behind his back having being taken to the floor.
An officer is understood to have managed to cuff one hand, but the man wouldn't allow them to cuff the other. He appears to be repeatedly warned to comply in the body cam footage.
The social media clip and body cam footage show the officer hitting the man three times in the head. He pauses before delivering a further two blows. Officers are permitted to use 'distraction' strikes to control and restrain people. Use of the technique must be justified and proportionate.
GMP said the use of those strikes was 'appropriate' and that it was one of 'multiple tactics' used by the officers to 'encourage compliance with arrest'.
