After hundreds of cringe dates, various stood-up singles and a number of success stories, Fred Sirieix is celebrating 10 years on First Dates – the Channel 4 show that made him a household name. “When I started, I was 40 and now I’m 51. I’m going in the wrong direction,” he laughs.
“It hits you that you don’t have so much time, and I don’t have time for bulls**t.” First Dates is returning with a new restaurant in Bath, maître d’ Fred – who recently returned from the I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! jungle – says it’s not just the location that’s changed over the years. “Daters are definitely pickier now,” he says.
“You could be online and talking to 10 different people at the same time. In the old days you would be in a bar and you’d be talking to one person at a time. It makes people want to swipe in their head.” He adds, “But in terms of what they’re looking for, they are looking for love and they want to make a connection.” From young singles with OnlyFans accounts to daters with heartbreaking pasts, the new series features all sorts of stories that are bound to captivate fans – including 53-year-old Georgina, who lost both her young daughters years before.
“How do people cope with things like that? How do they have the will to smile and look for the beauty and positivity in life when something so dreadful has happened to them?” Fred asks. “It’s about survival, you as a human being, your resilience – and we all love that. We sit down with a glass of wine and you laugh, you cry, you go, ‘Oh my God, this is so embarrassing!’” While Fred reveals that wedding planning with his fiancée, known as Fruitcake, is “going good”, what he’s learnt from First Dates is that there is “no normal” when it comes to love.
