Film Independent Spirit Awards Nominations 2022: ‘A Chiara’, ‘C’mon C’mon’, ‘The Lost Daughter’, ‘The Novice’, ‘Zola’ Round Out Best Feature

The race to earn an Animated Feature Oscar nomination is traditionally competitive, but 2021 will likely see at least two critically acclaimed films on the outside looking in. Things got more interesting this morning when the 49th Annie Awards announced their nominees and “Raya and the Last Dragon“ led all contenders with 10 nominations.

While the 2022 New York Film Critics Circle Awards were scheduled to take place at Tao Downtown in NYC on January 10, they’ve now been postponed due to the recent surge in Covid-19 cases witnessed across the country, with a new date for the ceremony to be unveiled early next year.

Disney films are the ones to beat at the 49th annual Annie Awards, whose nominations were announced this morning. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Raya and the Last Dragon and Encanto scored a leading 10 and nine noms, respectively, followed by Pixar’s Luca with eight.

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association is voting Saturday on the best films and performances of 2021. The group, made up of L.A. area print and digital journalists, is deliberating winners and runners-up throughout the morning in 14 categories including Best Picture.

The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) today announced the nominees for its 11th AACTA International Awards with Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast and Jane Campion’s The Power Of The Dog leading the pack, at seven and six mentions, respectively. Each is up for Best Film, along with Dune, Being The Ricardos, Nitram and Licorice Pizza.

After a pandemic hiatus, the Film Independent Spirt Awards will be back on the beach this year. They may not be the day before the Oscars or an afternoon affair, as has been tradition, but judging on this year’s nominations they will be more irreverant than ever.

There has been a lot of controversy over the HFPA going forward with the Golden Globe Awards considering the events of the past year (including NBC deciding to skip airing this year’s ceremony), but the Critics Choice Awards is no stranger to criticism. Especially surrounding its founder, who has been obsessed with turning the group historically made up of local television entertainment reporters into a legit awards body for decades.
