Details of the follow-up to 2012's The Idler Wheel... were confirmed in Emily Nussbaum's profile of Apple in The New Yorker last month. The album title is a reference to the British crime drama The Fall. Apple first started toying with ideas for the album in 2012, and began work on it in earnest in 2015. Amy Aileen Wood, Sebastian Steinberg, and David Garza all contributed to the record.
