Extinction Rebellion have targeted BAE’s Govan shipyard with a graffiti protest over its contribution to climate change as well as the war in Gaza.
Activists spraypainted the walls of the BAE Systems site in Glasgow with slogans opposing the defence firm’s contribution to global emissions as well as its supply of weapons to the Israeli Defence Force.
The climate group said the UK’s “military-industrial sector” belches out more greenhouse gas emissions than 60 countries, including Uganda which has a population of 45million people.
Using stencils and spray cans, protesters arrived around midnight on Monday to paint slogans like ‘Free Palestine’, ‘Stop Arming Israel’, ‘Govan Deserves Better’ and ‘Climate Chaos = More Wars’ onto the facility walls.
BAE Systems supplies the IDF with a number of weapons including the F-35 jet, contributing to civilian casualties in Gaza, the group said.
A spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion Glasgow said: “As well as the immediate horrors of Israel’s military operation, climate chaos will increase the conflict, as people fight over resources, arms companies and their shareholders benefit.
“During all warfare, the natural environment is directly attacked or damaged.
“Attacks can lead to water, soil and land contamination, or release pollutants into the air. Explosive remnants of war contaminate soil and water sources, and harm wildlife.
“Our governments have allowed spending on arms to outstrip spending on climate solutions.
“They’ve created a brutal world where many face conflict over ravaged resources. Their gross negligence is allowing climate chaos to create more war.”
Protesters have previously targeted Glasgow Uni and the city council over alleged “complicity” with BAE.
