Pet owners are no strangers to showing lots of love to their animals, but it's tough to know if a four-legged friend feels the same.
For many, dogs and cats are loved like part of the family and are given as much as possible to ensure they have the most comfortable life possible. Now, one expert has revealed whether the feeling is mutual, by revealing how such pets return affection.
While they can't exactly say they love you, cats and dogs can show it in their actions, according to Layla Beakhouse and Catrin George of Animal Friends Pet Insurance. With both cats and dogs having such contrasting temperaments, but both share some loving behaviours.
Cats are known to be aloof and independent creatures, but one way they show the love is through subtle signs like the slow blink, reports the Mirror. According to the experts, if a cat is staring unblinkingly at someone it can mean they are generally a little weary and are trying to sound them out.
However, if you notice your cat blinking slowly while looking at you, it's their equivalent of smiling and means they're happy to be in your company. Equally, if your cat kneads you with its paws, this means it loves you, as do the gentle headbutts it may give you from time to time.
"When a cat rubs their head against you, this is known as 'bunting' and is used by our kitties to claim familial relationships," explains Beakhouse.
"Kneading is a sign your pet feels safe and secure with you. Cats have scent glands all over their body - including on their face - so both head-butting and kneading are also used to share their scent, a strong signal of acceptance which marks you as one of their own."
