As travellers start planning their getaways for summer, they've been warned to keep an eye out for a wave of "hidden fees".
While it's tempting to find the cheapest price available, you may unknowingly be hit by a number of charges at the booking stage, sometimes for the most minute things. Fortunately, there are a few tips and tricks to help navigate these hidden charges so you can save some extra spending money for your time abroad.
Trevor Baker, a senior researcher at Which?'s travel department, discussed some of the top 'hidden fees' holidaymakers can expect when travelling abroad.
Speaking on Which's latest episode of its Get Answers podcast, he said: "It depends what sort of holiday you're thinking about. There are two ways to book a holiday; one is to do it yourself and the other is to book a package.
"And if you're doing it all yourself, that's when you basically have to be a walking calculator and spot all the fees that they're going to try and add to your booking. The classic ones are, with the airlines, so-called low-cost airlines, will charge you extra not just to put a suitcase in the hold but even to take a bag and put it in the overhead locker.
"They will also try and charge you to sit next to your travel companion." He highlighted that these hidden fees are common when someone looks for holiday deals through services and sites such as Google Flights, Skyscanner, Ryanair, and Easyjet where the upfront cost looks cheap but will quickly add up a wave of hidden fees, increasing the cost of the overall holiday booking.
