I’m fussy about foundations. I’m also not easy to please, considering I want my base to be light but relatively full coverage, sheer but not overly sheer, and long-lasting but not cakey. How could a product combine all of these things? It hasn’t been able to – until now.
I was first sent Estée Lauder’s Double Wear Sheer SPF20 foundation, £35.50 here, last month, but because it’s only just hit shelves this week, I kept it to the side to try at a date when you’d all be able to shop it. Before I go into my thoughts and what it managed to do to my skin, we have to talk a bit about the formulation. It’s the little sister to Double Wear, arguably the OG of full-coverage foundations.
You’ve probably heard of this original formula, and perhaps you’ve even used it. It’s legendary for being able to cover just about any texture and redness, and to withstand a full day without slipping. For this reason, it’s a favourite amongst acne and rosacea sufferers.
Now, as a “natural beauty” revolution sweeps through social media, Lauder have clearly cottoned on to the fact that a lighter, more sheer version of the original foundation would be incredibly popular. The new Sheer launch promises to still resist sweat and humidity, but offers a more minimal coverage. The consistency itself is also a lot more runny than the original, which had the thick tackiness of a full-coverage.This lighter version also has an SPF20 formula and promises protection from the sun, pollution and blue light. Perhaps the most interesting feature is, what Lauder says, its ability to “add moisture where skin is dry and keep oil production in check where needed”.

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film CriticWilliam Hurt, who died Sunday at 71, had a look and an aura that appeared, at first, to fit all too snugly into Hollywood’s conception of what a movie star should be. Tall and broad-shouldered, with a silky shock of wheat-colored hair, his handsome features set off by a cleft chin and a faraway gaze, he was, at a glance, the quintessence of the old-fashioned WASP he-man ideal.

Like many makeup fanatics, we consider Estée Lauder’s Double Wear Foundation a cult classic. The beloved formula is famed for its full-coverage, flawless matte finish. It also stays in place all day – at work, at the club, you name it. Saying that, as much as we love the stuff, it’s certainly not the cheapest.
