Emotional Kate Ferdinand ‘so proud’ of husband Rio as he’s awarded Honorary Doctorate

Kate Ferdinand felt "really alone and quite isolated" on Mother's Day last year because her husband Rio Ferdinand and her step-children have lost their mums. The 30-year-old star is a step-mum to her retired footballer husband Rio's three kids, Tate, 13, Lorenz, 15, and Tia, 10, who he shared with his late wife Rebecca Ellison, who died in 2015 from breast cancer aged 34. Former England star Rio also lost his mother, Janice, to cancer in 2017 when she passed away aged 58, and Kate admitted that while it was her first ever Mother's Day as a mum last year, she didn't feel it would be right to celebrate the day.

Kate Ferdinand has revealed the adorable name her three stepchildren, whom she shares with husband Rio Ferdinand, have affectionately adopted for her. Appearing on today's Loose Women, the 30 year old mum-of-one, who has one year old son Cree with the retired footballer, explained that the reason for the decision came as a result of her wanting to unite the family as one. Rio, 43, had Lorenz, 15, Tate, 13, and Tia, 10, with his late wife Rebecca Ellison, who sadly died of cancer in 2015, aged just 34.

Kate showed up dressed brightly in neon yellow polo top worn underneath a green blazer as she discussed with the panellists how her 15 month old son Cree had been getting on in the Ferdinand household with his siblings.

Kate, 30, celebrated her first Mother’s Day last year after welcoming son Cree in December 2020. Prior to becoming a biological mum, however, Kate had been acting as a step-mother to Rio Ferdinand’s three kids; Tate, 13, Lorenz, 15, and Tia, ten.
