Emmys 2021 Nominations List: The Crown, Bridgerton, The Queen’s Gambit & more take the lead

While we have yet to get the full lineups for Venice and TIFF, we are starting to see how some of the later fall festivals are going to fare, in terms of features. And even though the San Sebastian Film Festival begins after both Venice and TIFF, the Spanish event is already shaping up to be a strong festival, as we are getting a small sampling of the lineup that will debut in mid-September.

Non-binary performers are questioning why the Emmy Awards are divided by gender. Billions star Asia Kate Dillon, who identifies as non-binary, has raised concerns about the presented “male or female” options in award ceremonies when they consider themselves to be “neither of those things”.

The nominations for the upcoming 73rd Emmy Awards 2021 were recently announced on Tuesday and they turned out to be special for several reasons. The awards are known to honour the best of Television, including series and shows from streaming platforms.

Ron Cephas Jones (This Is Us) and Jasmine Cephas Jones (Blindspotting) announced all of the Emmy Award nominees in a virtual live-streamed event on emmys.com.  Hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, the 2021 Emmy Awards will broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+ on Sunday, September 19 at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT. For this year’s nominees, The Mandalorian and The Crown lead the pack with 24 nominations each.

The Television Academy should be proud in many ways of their nominations for the 73rd Annual Emmy Awards, a diverse list to be sure that includes 37 different programs receiving five or more nominations including such great newcomers as Hacks and Ted Lasso,  an impressive 45 first time performer nominees, including Mj Rodriguez, up for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Pose, making her the first transgender performer ever in a lead acting category.

Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin will be head-to-head at the Emmy Awards after they both were nominated for outstanding lead actress in a drama series. Colman, who plays the Queen, will be up against Corrin, who won critical acclaim for her portrayal of a young Diana, Princess of Wales.

The Crown, Ted Lasso and Mare of Easttown dominating the categories as expected. This year, the Emmys will highlight the best of what was an understandably abbreviated year in television, while almost all of last year’s major winners – among them Succession, Ozark and Euphoria – are out of contention due to the pandemic.
