Emmy Nominations Analysis: Crowd Pleasers, ‘Crown’ Pleasers, Increasing Diversity All Make A Mark, But Seven Actors From ‘Hamilton’? Really?

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at LargePBS led all networks in nominations for the 42nd annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards, landing 52 overall — thanks to the strength of signature series “Frontline,” “Independent Lens,” “POV,” “Nova,” “PBS News Hour” and “Nature.”The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced this year’s nominees on Tuesday morning, noting that more than 2,200 submissions were entered, from content that premiered in calendar year 2020.

PBS leads the nominations for the 42nd annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards, as it usually does, this year scoring 52 noms over last year’s 48. Vice News Tonight, which topped all programs with 16 noms in 2020, equaled that number this year but is tied with CBS’ 60 Minutes.

Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso, currently nominated for 20 Emmy Awards, debuted its second season on July 23 delivering the streamer’s biggest premiere day ever, largest opening weekend ever and #1 debut across all series and movies, the company said. As usual, Apple — like most SVOD players — did not provide hard numbers to back its claims.

Ted Lasso. The hit Apple+ television series stars Jason Sudeikis as the endlessly positive American football coach Ted Lasso, who is unexpectedly brought in to oversee a Premier League team, despite having no knowledge of association football before being hired.
