Former Emmerdale actor and Strictly Come Dancing star Kelvin Fletcher has shone a light on the reason behind his career change after departing from the ITV soap seven years ago. Kelvin, who became a father for the fourth time last year, joined Emmerdale back in 1996 as the character Andy Sugden, though quit the soap in 2016 after 20 years and has since embarked on a very different lifestyle.
Instead of spending his time on set and in front of TV cameras, 39 year old Kelvin and his wife Liz now own a 120-acre farm on the edge of the Peak District after upping sticks in 2020 - though it wasn’t their intention. Having initially hoped to move to Los Angeles with their young family, it was when lockdown hit due to the Covid-19 pandemic that the pair came across a for sale sign at a farm - causing them to kick off their “accidental” journey.
Speaking to the Mirror, Liz said: “It was Kelvin’s idea. We had two children, no real responsibilities, they weren’t at school, we had no jobs… then all visas got stopped, but we were in the mindset for change.
Kelvin saw this farm on Rightmove and said, 'Liz, what about buying this?.” Meanwhile, Kelvin explained that the pair fell into farming because of the lifestyle that came with it and that they were both craving “something different”. He added: “We didn’t do it because we wanted to be farmers.
We wanted something different. We looked at all sorts of places but the thought of this quiet, idyllic life got us.
Then, lo and behold, it’s not as quiet as you thought.
There are sheep, so you think, 'I’ll get some more sheep.' Then it snowballs.” Since their new adventure began three years ago, Kelvin and Liz are now responsible for 100 sheep, 30 pigs, 10 horses, six chickens, a cat and a dog
