Not all relationships can survive their son accidentally stabbing his own half-cousin, but Emmerdale has confirmed whether Cain and Moira will be able to push through the worst of it together. Fans of the show recall how Cain Dinger (Jeff Hordley) and Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb)’s son Matty Barton (Ash Palsmisciano) accidentally stabbed Cain’s own flesh-and-blood, Samson Dingle (Sam Hall) in an accidental altercation between Matty, Samson and troublesome newcomer, Josh Cope.
The stabbing has put a strain on the TV couple, as Moira was shown in a standoff with her husband, furious at him for failing to get Samson to confess to his involvement as her son, who she had with another man, sits behind bars.
What they don’t know is that Samson is being manipulated by the conniving and transphobic newcomer, Josh (Osian Morgan). Matty is the first transgender character in the show's history.
While Samson and Josh have been claiming that Matty stabbed them unprovoked, the viewer knows it is because Josh was hurling transphobic abuse at him and then shoved Samson into Matty’s knife, which he was only holding to clear plates away at The Hide where they were arguing. Moira and Cain had a furious row, where Moira berated Cain over his abusive father, and a drunk Cain almost hit her.
This led their relationship to a very dark place.
It appears as though this week their relationship is still teetering on the edge, but an honest and sober conversation between the two will lead to them reconciling their differences, at least for now. As long as Matty remains in prison, then trouble remains for the couple, as they have to choose between their loved ones.
