Police have launched a probe after toilets were 'torched' at an Edinburgh Festival venue.
The City Café on Blair Street was evacuated after black smoke was seen coming from one of the cubicles in the male loos. Fire crews raced to the scene within minutes and quickly extinguished the blaze but staff have slammed those responsible warning that it "could have ended in tragedy". There are no reported injuries.
A man who is believed to have started the fire was seen sitting at the bar shortly before it broke out and police say their enquiries are ongoing.
Assistant manager of the venue Karolina Stalica told Edinburgh Live: "This couple came in at around 11.30pm on August 13, and very casually ordered some cocktails before they decided to use the restrooms.
"At 12.01am the fire alarm went off, one of the performers and one of our own staff members that was in the toilet noticed black smoke coming out of one the cubicles. They started trying to get the fire out with the extinguisher."
Karolina quickly evacuated the building and fire crews were at the scene within minutes. Police are now treating the incident as "suspicious" and Karolina believing those responsible "must have put effort into it".
She added: "The fire brigade made sure the building was safe before they let anyone in and were extremely careful with checking the structure of the building.
"The way our toilets are set up it would be extremely difficult to accidentally set the toilet paper on fire, so it was obvious that someone must've put some effort into that.
"I have no idea why they would do this. Luckily no one was hurt but there are families and kids that live in flats upstairs - if it wasn't for our staff and the firefighters this stupid joke could have ended up in
