Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic Very few people would have guessed that we’d be getting an album of previously unreleased original material from Johnny Cash in 2024 — a collection that really feels like a “new” album from the legendary singer, 21 years after his death. Far fewer still bet on anything coming out at this late date would be any good, if the original recordings sat in the vault this long.

The man behind the acid attack on TV presenter Katie Piper is up for parole. Daniel Lynch, a former boyfriend of Katie, 40, was convicted five years ago of arranging for Stefan Sylvestre to throw the corrosive liquid at the former model in March 2008.The attack left her blind in one eye and needing multiple surgeries. Lynch was jailed for life with a minimum term of 16 years in May 2009 at London’s Wood Green Crown Court for the rape of Piper and for telling Sylvestre to throw acid on her.

The latest statistics from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) show that the State Pension currently provides a regular financial income for nearly 12.7 million older people across the country, including more than one million retirees living in Scotland. This payment is available for those who have reached the UK Government’s eligible retirement age, which is currently 66 for both men and women, and have paid at least 10 years' worth of National Insurance (NI) contributions.

The Conservative Party manifesto confirms that a General Election win on July 4 will see the introduction of the ‘Triple Lock Plus’, a new measure that will ensure the Personal Allowance - which has been frozen at £12,570 since April 2021 - rise in-line each year with the Triple Lock. This guarantee would mean that the Personal Allowance is always higher than the maximum rate of the New State Pension, which is now worth £11,502 annually.

The Conservatives have pledged to halt the rising costs of welfare by reforming the benefits system if they win the General Election on July 4. The latest offer from the Tories would help to save some £12 billion a year by the end of the next parliament, the party has claimed, by ensuring more working age people currently claiming benefits have a job.

The Liberal Democrats have launched their Party manifesto which pledges to maintain the State Pension Triple Lock, in a move similar to that of Labour and the Conservatives. They have also pledged to ensure women born in the 1950s, who have been affected by changes to the State Pension age, are “finally treated fairly and properly compensated”.
