Determined Dumfriesshire parents, Jenny and Nigel Pike, are calling for donations to help the Eden Valley Hospice in memory of their late daughter, Anna.
The teacher, who was originally from Dumfries and brought up in Langholm and then Canonbie – where her parents still live – taught at Petteril Bank Primary School in Carlisle until she fell ill with an extremely rare form of cancer and died, aged 39.
She was cared for at the hospice – which serves Carlisle and Dumfries and Galloway – during the final months of her life in 2018.
It costs the hospice more than £4 million a year to provide services to patients and their families, with only around 20 per cent of that coming from the NHS, and the couple, family and friends, are doing what they can to raise funds in Anna’s memory.
Mum, Jenny, said: “When Anna became ill, the hospice enabled her to live as normal a life as possible, at home, just visiting the hospice daily or overnight, when required, for symptom control.
“When she became an in-patient on the adult ward, her family and partner were given accommodation at the hospice, so we could be near her.
“I cannot thank them enough for this. They made the worse time of our lives bearable. We were all treated with such kindness and understanding.
“Nothing was too much trouble and Anna’s much-loved dog was even allowed to visit.
“The hospice provides an essential service for those with life limiting illnesses and their families.
“It would not keep going without donations. So please support them, in anyway you can.”
Jenny took part in the Great North Run to help the fund the hospice a year after her death, and a friend of Anna’s was yesterday on the100th day of an epic fundraising trek – named The Great British Gut
