However, Education Scotland said the review of Lincluden Primary took place during a period of “significant change” and a new headteacher and staff are “working well” to make improvements.
The two quality indicators for the primary – learning, teaching and assessment, and raising attainment and achievement – were rated as “weak” by inspectors when they visited in June this year.
The report stated: “Planning in most lessons does not meet the needs of all children and, as a result, a minority of learners are disengaged with learning.”

It stated: “There has been a significant change to the structure of the senior leadership team in recent years. This has impacted on the school’s capacity to take forward key school improvements. A new headteacher took up post in May 2023, just prior to the inspection.”
The new headteacher, Claire Storey, and staff are “working together well to identify priorities for improvement”, while children across the school and nursery are friendly and keen to learn.
Education Scotland said they will visit again within a year to track progress.
HM Inspector Judith Reid said: “As a result of our inspection findings we think the school needs additional support and more time to make necessary improvements.
“We will liaise with Dumfries and Galloway Council regarding the school’s capacity to improve. We will return to carry out a further inspection of the school within one year of the publication of this letter. We will discuss with Dumfries and Galloway Council the details of this
