A driver who was so drunk that he couldn't speak after he caused a head-on crash has thanked a "higher power" after he dodged jail. Neil Bason downed several pints while watching the France-England clash in the World Cup on December 10 last year.
After leaving the pub, he got behind the wheel of his Ford Fiesta and caused the horror smash while driving the wrong way around a roundabout in Southport, Merseyside. The ex-carer fled the scene on foot and later claimed a friend was driving at the time.
Last week, Bason, 37, walked free from court, despite being told that he was lucky he had "not seriously injured or killed" anyone else, Liverpool ECHO reports. Just two hours later, he wrote on Facebook: "Someone definitely looking down on me today from a higher power." He added a smiley face emoji to the post.
Liverpool Crown Court heard that Declan Preston was driving his Ford Mondeo on Southport Road at around 10.30pm when he entered the junction with Scarisbrick New Road. Paul Blasbery, prosecuting, told how Mr Preston saw the glare of headlights from Bason's Fiesta, which was travelling anti-clockwise around the junction.
The stunned driver "slammed on his brakes" but could not avoid the head-on collision. He was left in his car "shaking" before getting out to confront Bason.
The court heard Mr Preston asked the other motorist "what the hell he was doing" and said: "You must be drunk." Mr Blasbery said that Bason "couldn't even speak" and got back into his car briefly before walking away. A passerby who had helped Mr Preston in the moments following the smash, then spotted Bason at a nearby petrol station and alerted police.
