Douglas Ross should be “begging for forgiveness” from Scots for the carnage inflicted by the Tories over the last 14 years, Anas Sarwar has said.
During the STV leaders’ debate, the Scottish Labour leader tore into the Conservative chief over the surge in mortgage rates, food costs and energy prices - as well as partygate and the Liz Truss premiership.
Sarwar blasted: “You shouldn’t be pleading for votes, you should be begging for forgiveness from the Scottish people.”
It came as part of feisty exchanges between Sarwar, Ross, SNP First Minister John Swinney and Lib Dem leader Alex Cole-Hamilton during the televised showpiece - the first of this general election campaign.
Pressed by Sarwar on the state of the economy, Ross said he was not "downplaying the difficult circumstances that are facing people in Scotland, across the UK and indeed in many other parts of the world".
The Scottish Tory leader also said "I hold my hands up" to making a mistake by initially backing Truss’ disastrous mini-budget which torpedoed the UK economy.
At the time, Ross had urged the Scottish Government to produce similar tax cuts to Truss’ unfunded measures.
