Ruth Wilson’s ‘The Woman in the Wall’ unpacks a ‘grim history’: review

Magdalene Laundries, a real church-run institution where so-called “immoral women,” such as pregnant teens out-of-wedlock, endured harrowing living conditions, frequent abuse and harsh work. And, Lorna’s baby was taken away from her. Father Percy was involved in this group home and police become suspicious of Lorna and other women who spent their youth there.Making matters more complicated, this is a bad time for Lorna to attract attention from authorities, since she also finds a dead woman in her home in a crime that’s seemingly unrelated to Father Percy’s murder.Since Lorna has had sleepwalking incidents after her teen trauma, she doesn’t know if she’s responsible for the corpse.

‘The Journals of Adam and Eve’ Review: Hal Linden and Sally Struthers Go East of Eden (and Studio City) in a Charming Stage Two-Hander

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic There’s no IP more innately suited for adaptation as a pure two-hander than the tale of Adam and Eve, a story in which, initially at least, there are no other characters, excepting the creator of the universe, who quickly gets relegated to a supporting role in the wake of more fleshed-out human leads. Legendary television scenarist Ed.

‘The American Society Of Magical Negroes’ Review: Kobi Libii’s Racial Satire Is Sensitive & Sharp [Review]

Kobi Libii’s work on the sadly short-lived Comedy Central show “The Opposition with Jordan Klepper” always tended toward the confrontational. By donning the guise of right-wing media provocateurs, he highlighted the absurd internal contradictions of ideological hardliners.

‘The American Society of Magical Negroes’ Review: A Racial Satire Wittier and More Scalding Than ‘American Fiction’

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic For some of us, “American Fiction” has a satirical audacity that’s funny right out of the gate, gathers speed and force on the runway — and then, somehow, just when the comedy should be taking off, it turns muted and moralistic instead. I think the hitch is that after Jeffrey Wright’s Monk sells his fake memoir of Black street life, there’s a strong urge to see him — and the film — take a certain vengeful joy in how the book’s popularity skewers the racism of clueless white people. Instead, Monk is made so miserable by what happens that the movie never allows itself to discover that joy.

Sundance has a long history of screening films that tackle issues of race in the U.S. from every possible angle. Some are angry (Birth of a Nation, 2016), some satirical (Dear White People, 2014), and some quite gonzo (Sorry to Bother You, 2018).

Marvel’s new show is its most violent yet, say critics

Echo, the newest series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has been labelled by many critics as its most violent show to date. The five-episode run, which is streaming now on Disney+, is a spinoff from the series Hawkeye from 2021, and follows the character of Maya Lopez, aka Echo, played by Alaqua Cox.In the show, Lopez returns to her hometown in Oklahoma, where she is forced to reckon with her past and reconnect with her Native American roots, in an effort to embrace her family and community. This series was first speculated upon back in 2021, with Echo, who is a deaf amputee with the ability to perfectly mimic the movements of others, heavily rumoured to be the subject of the show, even before Hawkeye had been first aired.Echo is the first show to be released under the ‘Marvel Spotlight’ banner, which they have introduced for select products that focus on “grounded, character-driven stories” and less on impacting the broader MCU narrative.Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Brad Winderbaum, said: “Just like comic fans didn’t need to read Avengers or Fantastic Four to enjoy a Ghost Rider Spotlight comic, our audience doesn’t need to have seen other Marvel series to understand what’s happening in Maya’s story.”Many reviews have focused on the surprising levels of violence in the show’s action sequences. In a three-star review, The Guardian wrote: “The show is significantly gnarlier than its Disney+ predecessors, with far bloodier violence than has graced the streamer before.”“While Echo doesn’t quite cure the pandemic of Marvel fatigue currently raging across the globe, it shows there may be some life in the old gal.”Empire Magazine, who also give the show three stars, also points to the excitement in some of the
