Diamond Bus issues statement after woman dies in Piccadilly Gardens crash

The company running a bus which smashed into a bubble tea shop at Piccadilly Gardens has issued a statement following the crash, which killed a pensioner. Diamond Bus North West says it is cooperating with police after an X50 bus hit the front of the T4 shop, next to the bus station yesterday afternoon (October 16).
Almena Amica, a 77-year-old woman who was a pedestrian at the time of the incident, has since died from her injuries sustained in the crash. Eleven other people, both pedestrians and bus passengers, were either treated at the scene or in hospital for minor injuries.
A 64-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has since been bailed.

In a statement issued this morning (Tuesday), a spokesperson for Diamond Bus North West said: "On October 16, 2023, one of our Diamond Bus North West vehicles was involved in a serious incident in Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester. Our priorities are the driver, passengers and pedestrians involved.
"We are cooperating with the police and emergency services. We do not have any further details we can share at this time."
An investigation into the collision is ongoing. The family of Almena, from south Manchester and known as Mena to her family and friends, has paid tribute to her in a statement released by Greater Manchester Police.
They said: "Mena was dedicated to her family, friends and faith. She loved music, gardening, TV soaps and nature.
