Gene Maddaus Senior Media Writer Negotiations between the Writers Guild of America and the major studios remained in limbo on Monday, after a week of public sparring failed to result in forward movement. The sides have not formally met since Aug. 18, when the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers rejected the WGA’s Aug.

As Hollywood waits for the WGA’s official response to the AMPTP’s latest contract offer, a ray of sunlight emerged for comedy/variety writers in the latest back-and-forth.

As the strike in Hollywood reaches Week 17, Deadline Strike Talk podcast host Billy Ray continues his push to find ways for AMPTP to come to terms with WGA and SAG-AFTRA. This after a week when hopes things were finally moving got dashed when WGA leadership slammed the latest AMPTP offer, and the signatories disclosed the actual offer publicly. This went against a news blackout and left finger pointing that AMPTP was trying to usurp WGA leadership being the filter to its members on progress of negotiations, to rile the rank and file. On Strike Talk, the emphasis is for enemies finding common ground. This week, Ray parses the path to a deal with former head of the AFL-CIO Michael Podhorzer and Paul W. Fleming, who is the General Secretary of British Equity. They discuss the state of labor globally, and how workers – in America and abroad – are finally reclaiming their power… to the betterment the global work force.

The WGA and the AMPTP have agreed to resume bargaining for a deal that could end the guild’s ongoing strike.

Gene Maddaus Senior Media Writer The Writers Guild of America will resume negotiations with the studios on Friday, the guild told members in an email. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers is set to deliver a response to the guild’s proposals, the union said.

As the ongoing WGA strike hits 100 days, the entirety of Hollywood wonders how long both that and the SAG-AFTRA strike will last. In the case of WGA, this strike is no officially longer than the 2007-2008 strike, but has a ways to go before it hits the 1988 writers’ strike 153 days, the longest in the union’s history.  Disney CEO Bob Iger hopes neither strike lasts that long, though.

Meeting for the first time in more than three months, the Writers Guild and the AMPTP on Friday failed to reach an agreement to resume contract negotiations. Their inability to agree on terms for returning to the bargaining table comes after their much anticipated meeting to discuss a possible resumption of talks.  

WGA chief negotiator Ellen Stutzman and WGA West general counsel Tony Segall ran about an hour on Friday afternoon at the Sherman Oaks headquarters of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Sources said the WGA duo made clear that the guild will not bend on proposals to establish minimum staffing levels in episodic TV and a guaranteed minimum number of weeks of employment. The AMPTP has called those proposals non-starters, and gave no indication on Friday that they’re prepared to change that position.
