David Fincher and Michael Fassbender to team up for assassin drama ‘The Killer’

Academy Awards — delayed two months by the coronavirus pandemic — with 10 nominations, including best picture, best director, acting nods for Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried, and a host of others for its lavish craft.  The rest were spread among a wide variety of contenders.

David Fincher made his return to feature filmmaking after a six-year absence with “Mank,” and it doesn’t look like he’s letting his momentum stop. The filmmaker revealed the projects he’s currently working on, including a TV series where he talks with special guests about the movies they love.

On Mank, VFX supervisor Wei Zheng paired state-of-the-art technology with old-school filmmaking techniques, to help David Fincher craft a singular portrait of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Marking Zheng’s sixth collaboration with the director, the Netflix drama follows alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman), as he finishes the script for Citizen Kane.

Jazz Tangcay Artisans EditorCostume designer Trish Summerville, who has previously worked with David Fincher on “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and “Gone Girl,” says she was very excited when she learned the director wanted to do a full project in black-and-white. The only time she had ever tackled crafting costumes was in flashback sequences, not a full-length feature.

When makeup and hair designers Gigi Williams and Kimberly Spiteri were approached for Mank, they jumped at the chance to craft looks for an Old Hollywood drama, set in an era they both loved.

Mank, was one of the most nominated going into the award ceremony, with the potential to win in big categories like best director, screenplay and drama motion picture. But the black-and-white ode to old Hollywood failed to net a single win, leaving the auteur with a choice: do the fake clap and smile, or indulge in a little.

The Golden Globes 2021 was full of dramatic moments and significant speeches as well as some technical glitches as the awards show was held virtually this year. This year's Golden Globes had quite a few surprises and snubs as a few shows and films did not make the cut.

Following his critically acclaim work directing Mank, David Fincher looks to have found his next project returning to a genre he knows well. Sources tell Deadline Fincher is currently developing an adaptation of the Alexis Nolent’s The Killer graphic novel series, re-teaming with Seven screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker, who will adapt. While unconfirmed, sources also say Michael Fassbender is in talks to star in the pic. Netflix would not comment on Fassbender’s involvement.
