Brian May says he “bowed out” to David Bowie in fight for mix of Queen’s ‘Under Pressure’ – but has “never liked it”

Queen guitarist Brian May has revealed that he has “never liked” the mix of ‘Under Pressure’, the band’s 1981 smash hit collaboration with David Bowie. Speaking in an interview with Total Guitar (via Guitar World), May revealed that the original version of ‘Under Pressure’ “sounded massively chord-driven,” but that much of its “heavy guitar was lost” following Bowie’s input on the final mix.Recalling the song’s creation, May said ‘Under Pressure’ was the result of spontaneous late nights in the studio, with the initial cut featuring a “pretty heavy backing track.” At first, May said he was “beaming” over the heavier guitar sound because it reminded him of The Who.May raised that comparison to Bowie, who said “‘it’s not going to sound like The Who by the time I’ve finished with it.’” May continued: “[Bowie] didn’t want it to be that way.”The guitarist said that the changes were made because “we all had different ideas of how [‘Under Pressure’] should be mixed,” specifically naming Bowie and Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.“Basically it was Freddie and David fighting it out in the studio with the mix,” May recalled, “and what happened in the mix was that most of that heavy guitar was lost.”May went on to reveal that he originally played the main riff of ‘Under Pressure’ on an electric guitar, but that it was replaced by the “acoustic bits which were done first as a sort of demo.” As for the final mix that was eventually released, May admitted that he “never liked it, to be honest.”“I do recognise that it works.

The ‘My Way’ Story: The Song’s Unlikely Journey From France to David Bowie, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Las Vegas and the Super Bowl

Super Bowl were wise to pay tribute to the man who arguably played the biggest role (besides Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel) in making the Sin City what it is today: Frank Sinatra, whose Rat Pack-era residencies defined Vegas in the 1950s, along with his best-known song, “My Way.” The song — which is now among the most-covered songs of all time — already had traveled a long way before it reached Ol’ Blue Eyes in 1968. Since then, it has been performed countless thousands of times, by everyone from Elvis Presley and Nina Simone to Sid Vicious and Miley Cyrus.

according to Billboard. The deal would also be the biggest ever for the work of a single musician, the BBC reported.Jackson, who died in 2009, remains immensely popular on music streaming services like Spotify, where he averages 40 million monthly listeners.Just two of his countless hits, “Billie Jean” and “Beat It,” have each been played more than one billion times on Spotify alone, according to the BBC.The deal comes just as an upcoming biopic about Jackson’s life and career starring his nephew is set to hit the big screen next year. The deal also reportedly includes tracks by other artists that had been acquired by Jackson’s Mijac publishing group — including hit songs by Ray Charles, Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin, the BBC reported. The Jackson deal is as big or bigger than the $1.2 billion deal sought by Queen, which includes royalties for streams and other uses like the Freddy Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” and theatrical productions, according to Billboard.Sony’s deal with Jackson’s estate does not include royalties from the Broadway play and other theatrical productions featuring his music, the outlet reported.Sony paid $100 million in 1991 to buy the first half of what became Sony/ATV— ATV being the catalog that Jackson purchased in 1985 that included the Beatles catalog, according to Billboard.

Early in Yance Ford’s visual essay “Power,” he tells the audience that the film to come either requires “curiosity” or  “at least suspicion” from the viewer. David Lynch’s lost ‘Dune 2’ script has been found – here’s what was in it

Dune sequel has been found, teasing what could have been had the director’s plans for a trilogy come to fruition.Max Evry, the author of ‘A Masterpiece in Disarray: David Lynch’s Dune. An Oral History,’ unearthed the script in July of last year while working on his book, finding it in Frank Herbert’s (the author of Dune and its five sequels) archives at California State University, Fullerton. In an article for WIRED, Evry spoke highly of the Lynch’s script, saying: “He also cracked a way to tell the complex story of Herbert’s 1969 novel Dune Messiah, easily the least cinematic book in the series.”“It may ring of sacrilege to some, but Lynch’s Dune II would have bested Herbert’s book — and been one hell of a movie,” he added.Evry noted various intriguing details about the script, including how it opened with a new set of scenes that don’t feature in Herbert’s novel, picking up in the aftermath of the Harkonnen’s attack on Arrakeen that saw Duncan Idaho (Richard Jordan) killed in action.Lynch’s Messiah would have also revealed that Leonardo Cimino’s mysterious doctor from the first film was actually a major figure from Herbert’s novels: Scytale, a “face-dancer” of the sinister genetically enhanced beings known as the Bene Tleilax.Following the assault on Arrakeen, Scytale takes Idaho’s body and attempts to resurrect him as the clone “Ghola” Hayt.
