Millions of workers are set to get a pay increase after UK chancellor Jeremy Hunt unveiled plans to boost the National Living Wage (NLW) last month. The news comes as the cost of living continues to soar and wages decrease in real terms for many.
Though the announcement of the rising NLW came last month, workers won't feel the impact for some time. The NLW will rise to two-thirds of average earnings, with the chancellor committing to Low Pay Commission recommendations, with latest forecasts showing a pay boost worth over £1,000 for two million low-paid workers.
The NLW is a minimum hourly pay rate that is intended to ensure a basic living standard for workers aged 23 and over. It is designed to help reduce rates of in-work poverty and "incentivise work". Currently, the NLW is £10.42 but this is set to change.
Based on the Low Pay Commission's latest forecasts, the National Living Wage is due to increase to over £11 an hour from April 2024. This would mean the annual earnings of a full-time worker on the NLW will increase by over £1,000 next year.
The Government claims the announcement means a full-time worker on the NLW will be over £9,000 better off than they would have been in 2010. However, everyday expenses cost far more now than they did over a decade ago.
As part of the announcement that the NLW will increase, the Government provided a regional breakdown on those getting a wage boost, including those on the National Minimum Wage:

The NLW has been criticised by some as not being a living wage at all, particularly in areas of the country where housing costs are greater than others. For instance, workers on the wage in London receive just as much as others, despite living costs being higher in
