Arlo Parks on Collaborating With Phoebe Bridgers and How Writing Her New Album Was Like Speaking to a ‘Best Friend or Therapist’

Ellise Shafer Arlo Parks’ sophomore album is, in some ways, accidental. “I started listening to everything I’d collected, and I was like, ‘Whoa! I pretty much got the raw material for an album here,’” she tells Variety. “I tricked myself somehow.” This helped the 22-year-old London native avoid some of the pressure that often accompanies an artist’s second LP — especially if they’ve had an ascent like Parks’. After building a loyal fan base in the U.K., she released her debut album, “Collapsed in Sunbeams,” in January 2021. It went on to win the prestigious Mercury Prize and earn Parks best new artist and alternative album nominations at the 2022 Grammys. But all of that success didn’t come without a cost: After opening for Harry Styles, Clairo and Billie Eilish in the first half of 2022, Parks canceled part of her U.S. tour later in the year, saying her mental health had “deteriorated to a debilitating place.”

New Zealand Renews Film and TV Production Incentives System, Following Review

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief The New Zealand government said on Tuesday that the country’s generous screen production incentives systems are to be continued. The decision follows a New Zealand government review of the local and international production incentives and the post-production and visual effects schemes that began in late 2022. They also follow expansion announced earlier this month of the rebate schemes in Australia. The two neighbors compete for international or ‘runaway’ productions on criteria including: locations, English-language skills, studio space, post-production and digital effects facilities, as well as cash rebates.

Daft Punk’s ‘Random Access Memories’ hits top of Billboard Dance/Electronic albums chart

Daft Punk‘s ‘Random Access Memories’ has returned to the top of the Billboard Dance/Electronic albums chart. The legendary French duo, who broke up in 2021, released a new anniversary edition of their fourth and final album, which first came out a decade ago last week.Since the release of the anniversary edition, streams of ‘Random Access Memories’ have gone up by over 1,000 per cent, as Billboard report, with the album now sitting atop the Dance/Electronic albums chart.Released as part of the anniversary edition is a previously unreleased song featuring The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas, titled ‘Infinity Repeating’.The new version of the album also includes studio outtakes of the album opener ‘Give Live Back To Music’, vocoder tests of ‘Lose Yourself To Dance’ and the song ‘Horizon’, which previously only appeared on the Japanese version of the CD.NME recently explored how ‘Random Access Memories’ became the most hyped album of its era in a special retrospective feature. In other Daft Punk news, earlier this year Thomas Bangalter explained the reasons behind the duo’s split in 2021. “My concerns about the rise of artificial intelligence go beyond its use in music creation,” he said, explaining that fans often misunderstood their music.“[In Daft Punk,] we tried to use these machines to express something extremely moving that a machine cannot feel, but a human can.

The Coral have shared their cinematic string-laden new single ‘Wild Bird’ – and spoken to NME about how Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy and Life On Mars lead actor John Simm hooked up with the band for not one, but two albums in 2023.Inspired by the dusty desert landscapes of ’60s Italian spaghetti westerns, the band’s 11th studio album ‘Sea Of Mirrors’ finds the Liverpool five-piece crafting their own “surreal” gun-slinging soundtrack.“I was watching this documentary about Italian westerns and I liked this idea that they were a vehicle for creativity,” frontman James Skelly told NME. “I thought I’d love to use that medium to make an almost surreal western, but as if [late Italian director Frederico] Fellini had directed it.

Morgan Wallen Rules Albums Chart for 11th Week, as Jonas Brothers Launch at No. 3 and Daft Punk Makes Comeback at No. 8

Thania Garcia Morgan Wallen’s “One Thing at a Time” spends an 11th consecutive week topping the Billboard 200 albums chart — meeting marks set by the “Titanic” soundtrack, which ruled over the chart for 16 weeks in a row back in 1998, and joining record-setters Whitney Houston and Stevie Wonder. In the latest tracking week, “One Thing” garnered the equivalent of 134,500 sales in the United States, including 165 million streams, according to data by Luminate. The 36-song set is the first of any genre to spend its first 11 weeks at the summit (meaning it opened at No. 1 and stayed there) since Houston’s 1987 album “Whitney,” which boasted classics like “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go.” Before that, Wonder’s “Songs in the Key of Life” notched 13 weeks at No. 1 in 1976 and 1977.

Paul Simon Considers God, Man and for Whom the Bell Tolls in Quietly Stunning ‘Seven Psalms’: Album Review

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic All these decades on, Paul Simon is still looking for angels in the architecture. Maybe especially now; he’s 81 and, like many of his contemporaries, thinking about end-of-life issues both spiritual and corporeal. The observations in his quietly stunning new album, ”Seven Psalms,” reflect a sort of consummate maturity: There aren’t many more stages of ripeness you can move on to, in this life, beyond the one where a hard out looms. “Psalms” is a collection of songs with concerns in the past, present and (maybe) future, with Simon briefly looking back at some bridges burned; looking presently at how little the topical concerns that divide us seem to matter in the face of mortality; and looking ahead to see… well, to see if there is an ahead, as afterlife concerns remain as murky in old age as they did in youth.
