Neil Lennon has revealed that he wanted to sign Cyriel Dessers for Celtic.
The Nigerian has filled the striking hole left at Rangers by Alfredo Morelos after joining Michael Beale’s rebuild in a £4.5million switch from Cremonese and is expected to lead the line for the Light Blues this term. But he could have been playing on the other side of Glasgow before now had Lennon gotten his way.
He was Celtic boss during the 2019/20 season in which Dessers struck 15 goals for Heracles before the Eredivisie season was abandoned due to Covid. He was jointly-awarded the golden boot alongside Steven Berghuis, then of Feyenoord. Lennon liked what he saw from Dessers, but the striker moved to Belgian side Genk that summer on a four-year deal. But now, after Cremonese’s relegation from the Italian top flight last season, he’s landed at Rangers as Beale hopes he can spearhead their title charge.
“I watched him when he was at Heracles and he was the leading goalscorer in the Dutch league that season,” Lennon told Go Radio. “He’s a big, powerful player with a little bit of technique sometimes, with the soft feet.
“But he’s a goalscorer and I think at £4.5million he could be a great bit of business for Rangers. They needed a striker and they’ve got one in the building now.
“He was one of the players that came up. You’ve many, many options in that position and Cyriel was one of them. He went on to Cremonese for a while.
“But his goal record is good and he's a physical type. Quick, strong as has a goal in him. For £4.5million, that’s decent business.”

The law, SB 49, which is scheduled to take effect on August 28, prohibits health care providers in Missouri from prescribing puberty blockers, hormones, or gender confirmation surgery — the latter of which rarely is prescribed for those under 18 — to minors suffering from gender dysphoria. The law contains an exception for those who have already begun gender-affirming care that will allow them to continue receiving it if their doctors believe that stopping treatment would do more harm. The law also prohibits Medicaid from covering the cost of any transition-related treatments or procedures, regardless of the age of the patient — meaning low-income transgender adults are effectively barred from accessing gender-affirming care, and prohibits incarcerated individuals from obtaining gender confirmation surgery. The lawsuit argues that the ban is unconstitutional, violating the rights of transgender youth by discriminating against them on the basis of both sex and gender identity, and violating parents’ fundamental right to make decisions they believe to be in the best interest of their children. The lawsuit also claims that, unless the court issues an injunction to block Missouri from enforcing the law, all the plaintiffs will be irreparably harmed. By banning the transgender youth from accessing gender-affirming care, the state is likely to exacerbate the youths’ feelings of anxiety and gender dysphoria, as well as lead to potential mental health issues.

Mississippi minors are being denied access to widely used e-book and audiobook platforms due to a new book-banning law.The law, which went into effect at the beginning of July, purportedly intends to protect minors from digital resources and databases that contain “sexually oriented” materials. The impact? Because OverDrive, Hoopla, and Mississippi state libraries lack age-based content restrictions, some public libraries are making their online databases –- including those entirely lacking in sexual content — entirely inaccessible to all young people under the age of 18, including disabled minors who may depend on audiobook or e-book access to read.“This move by the state ensures that those with the least privileges — those in unstable homes, those without regular internet access, and those without active parents or guardians in their lives — have even fewer opportunities to utilize public goods and services,” Kelly Jensen, the editor of Book Riot, the largest independent editorial book site, wrote in analyzing the ban.Given how existing Mississippi law defines “sexually oriented” materials, vendors could potentially be deemed to be violating the law by providing access to materials depicting sexual reproduction, nudity or displays of human anatomy, sexual health information, or depictions of LGBTQ identity. Depictions of any of these topics would be treated as equivalent to providing access to hardcore pornography.Violators of the law can face fines between $500 and $5,000, as well as possible prison time.

Paul McCartney befuddled Beatles fans last month when he announced the band would be releasing a record featuring the late John Lennon, with the help of artificial intelligence. "When we came to make what will be the last Beatles record it was a demo that John had – that we worked on and we just finished it up – it'll be released this year. We were able to take John's voice and get it pure through this AI so that then we could mix the record as you would normally do," he told BBC Radio 4's Today show. Fans began questioning why the Beatles would do such a thing, sharing their disdain on social media.
