Cynthia Erivo to Be Honored With Breakthrough Performance Award at Palm Springs International Film Festival

The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) announced today it would award “Queen & Slim” writer Lena Waithe and Academy Award-winning actor Louis Gossett, Jr. for their outstanding achievements in entertainment at the 2020 ABFF Honors on Feb. 23 in Los Angeles.

This year's Oscar acting hopefuls include a mix of roles based on historical figures, such as Renée Zellweger as Judy Garland in Judy and Cynthia Erivo as Harriet Tubman in Harriet, as well as fictional roles, such as Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck in Joker.

It’s a lesser known corner from American history, yet one of its most inspirational stories. The life of the extraordinary Harriet Tubman arrives in British cinemas on Friday in the shape of Kasi Lemmon’s Harriet, the story of an escaped slave who went on to free hundreds more like her in the Southern states of America during the second half of the 19th century. Her determination and tenacity ultimately helped change the course of history.

Renee Zellweger won the award for best actress in a drama motion picture for her portrayal of Judy Garland in the biopic Judy at the 2020 Golden Globes, held Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton.Zellweger beat out competition that included Charlize Theron (Bombshell), Cynthia Erivo (Harriet), Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story) and Saoirse Ronan (Little Women).

Elton John and longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin have won the award for Best Original Song at this year’s Golden Globes. Their Rocketman track “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again”—performed by John and lead actor Taron Egerton—beat out Beyoncé’s “Spirit” (The Lion King), “Into the Unknown” (Frozen II), Cynthia Erivo’s “Stand Up” (Harriet), and Taylor Swift’s Andrew Lloyd Webber collaboration “Beautiful Ghosts” (Cats).
